Join us for an illuminating session with two of our partners from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Consortium:
–Dr. Ann Canning, education consultant at the TPS Eastern Region at Waynesburg University and co-developer/facilitator of online learning experiences such as the TPS Leadership Institute, TPS BASICS, and the Transformative Teaching Initiative.
–Dr. Sara Evers, assistant professor of teacher education at Ferrum College and former social studies methods instructor at Virginia Tech University. In 2022, Canning, Evers, and their colleagues piloted a model for introducing pre-service teachers to rigorous historical inquiry and “hard histories” in an accessible way, using RQI’s free Primary Sources Online Modules.
They embedded these four professional learning modules into a social studies methods course for pre-service teacher candidates, creating a “course within a course.” By adding extension activities and assessments, they increased the modules’ academic rigor for a university setting without sacrificing accessibility.
In this one-hour webinar, Canning and Evers will discuss the course design and share concrete examples of how pre-service and first-year teachers applied the approach to address important topics in social studies classrooms. You will leave with examples, tips, resources, and opportunities to replicate similar results in your own work — whether you are a classroom teacher, a methods instructor, or a professional development provider. Educators in all roles are welcome.
