Legal empowerment and criminal justice: A simple and powerful strategy for advocates and professionals working in carceral settings to build client agency
RQI Legal Empowerment Fall Webinar Series
The Legal Empowerment Program at the Right Question Institute (RQI) specializes in designing simple educational methods and tools to teach skills essential for empowerment, advocacy, and agency. Specifically, RQI helps people working on the front lines of a range of systems build the ability of their clients to: a) ask better questions, and b) participate more effectively in decisions that affect their lives and the lives of their families.
In this interactive training session, participants will learn a practical method to:
- Strengthen clients’ sense of agency and voice as they navigate all stages of the criminal justice system.
- Build people’s capacity to advocate for themselves and take action on their own behalf in all places where decisions are being made that affect them, in the legal system and beyond.
Participants will examine the method through an active learning experience, discuss applications to their work, and explore a specific tool they can integrate into their practice. Facilitators will share examples of how the method has been used in carceral settings, re-entry programs, homeless shelters, and more. After the session there will be opportunities for participants to receive personalized support in learning how to use the method with their clients.
At the end of the webinar, participants will receive a link to download supplemental resources, including the tool introduced in the webinar and a facilitation guide.
Who should attend: This webinar will be relevant to anyone interested in practical and universally applicable methods for achieving legal empowerment in the criminal justice context. People working on the front lines as public defenders, advocates, re-entry specialists, and direct service providers for people who were formerly incarcerated are especially encouraged to attend.
