Our strategies and resources are the outcomes of decades of work. We continue to learn with practitioners across many fields to develop and simplify two robust processes,

  • The Question Formulation Technique, which helps all individuals learn how to formulate, work with, and use their own questions. Through learning how to ask their own questions everyone, students, parents, clients, and patients alike, can become more engaged, critical thinkers.
  • The Voice in Decisions Technique, formerly known as the Framework for Accountable Decision Making, which helps individuals, learn for themselves how to effectively participate in decisions that affect them. Through learning how to effectively participate in decision, the decision-making process becomes more democratic and all individuals are equipped with skills to advocate for themselves.

I don’t think I have ever had a student who have voted before, except maybe voting for homecoming queen or teacher of the year. Other than that they never voted in an election to the city council, the school board or anything else… After doing the workshop many students gained an appreciation voting is a right and is an important freedom… had quite a few that actually voted. They come back really proud. They went to the county elections and voted for the school board. It actually makes a difference.

For me, their questions and the young man’s comment made my day. I wanted the students to own the class. I wanted them to have a say in what we learn and how we learn it. After using the QFT just one time, I was already noticing a change in the engagement of my students.

I think it helps us build higher level questions. When we go over our questions and try to make them better, it helps us think. The questions help us dig deeper and go beyond basic facts and we develop questions that give us more than yes or no answers.

…it wouldn’t be hard to supercharge the Question Formulation Technique with big questions. Teachers could choose Question Foci with big understandings in mind. Learners could include criteria related to insight, action, ethics, and opportunity as they sort their questions for importance. The main point is this: putting learners in charge of questions.

It helps me by getting me to think about questions on my own. Also, it gets my mind in motion to think about the questions other people make.
