Client empowerment is increasingly emphasized in legal services, health care, aged care, social work, and schools.

How can a nurse work with patients to make them feel empowered? How can a social worker collaborate with adult clients who have disabilities or learning disabilities — so they feel empowered and better prepared to advocate for themselves? Can women involved in the legal system be empowered through legal awareness and building self-advocacy skills, including the skill of asking the right questions? What can be done to empower parents in schools?

One important area of recent focus is teaching self-advocacy skills to students, especially students with disabilities, including physical and cognitive disabilities, or students with neurodevelopmental differences, such as autism. Here you will find activities to do with children and adults to teach them how to advocate for themselves.
