The Question Formulation Technique for Research

The Question Formulation Technique for Research
An overview of the elements of the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) for Research. The QFT for Research was adapted and developed with funding from the National Science Foundation so researchers may use a discrete strategy to ask better, more transformative research questions.

Explore how the QFT can strengthen research & projects

Faculty from a range of institutions of higher education have partnered with the Right Question Institute as we provide expertise on how question formulation and the QFT might support and strengthen grant proposals, projects, and research.

The QFT helped refine questions I did not think could be serious into strong questions that could lead to better advance my research.

We’re three weeks into the semester, and students are becoming animated and engaged. And they appear to be developing into a community of thinkers. Thank you so much for teaching an effective technique that is so easy to incorporate.

Just the act of brainstorming questions led to more questions. It really helped me understand not only what I didn’t know about the subject, but also what I wanted to know.

There is more than one way to ask a question and revising questions can be a very productive, and effective, strategy to innovate…the QFT helped me take time to really think through what it is I want to do with my projects, as well as consider potential, new directions.

I thought of new questions I didn’t realize I was curious about once I started brainstorming all the options.

Build question formulation capacity on your campus

We lead in-person active learning workshops around the country for faculty, researchers, students, and all learners.

QFT for Research

Experience the QFT for research as both an individualized and group experience. Learn how it can create the space to develop better, more transformative questions as well as more inclusive research.

  • For: Researchers, faculty, administrators, students, doctoral and graduate researchers, undergraduate researchers, and all learners who would like to develop better research questions.

Request

QFT in the classroom

Experience the QFT, learn how and why it works, and explore its applications across higher education settings. Individuals leave with a plan to use the QFT with learners that can be implemented in the classroom or informal learning spaces immediately.

  • For: Faculty, administrators, and other educators supporting learners in classrooms and around campus.

Request

License the QFT

Explore how you might be able to build capacity on your campus so all faculty and all learners might be able to access and integrate the QFT into their work.

  • For: Administrators or leaders on campus who are eager to build capacity and have access resources to support systemic or widespread adoption.
