The Right Question Institute (RQI) is excited to announce the launch of Inquire Higher, a webinar series on the skill of question formulation in higher education, beginning this summer (2020).
We continue to learn from the field on how to leverage the skill of question formulation to foster more engagement, collaboration, and self-directed learning in research and in the classroom. Not only do we learn from faculty members, researchers, and instructors–we also learn from students, undergraduate and graduate alike, about how a powerful, yet simple strategy can transform learning and research. This series will feature different perspectives on how the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) supports critical thinking and deeper learning at colleges and universities around the world, and will provide you direct access to emergent ideas and practical applications from the field.
Below you can explore upcoming and previous webinars in the series. If you have not already, sign up for our educator network to be the first to receive emails on upcoming webinars.
If you or someone you know might be interested in sharing their insight and knowledge on how the QFT was applied in higher education, please email Andrew Minigan. We look forward to learning with you!

Question Formulation on the Fly: Engaging Faculty, Undergrads, and Youth
with Christina Buffington, Research Staff and Science Education Specialist, International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF); Adjunct Faculty, UAF’s Department of Natural Resources & Environment
Sometimes it takes a brave colleague to share the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) at a professional development session. For Christina (Christi) Buffington, Science Education Specialist at the International Arctic Research Center, a colleague’s risk five years ago was Christi’s reward. Since then, Christi has engaged K-12 youth, undergraduate students, and now other academic colleagues in using QFT for science inquiry. This session will share successes to emulate and pitfalls to avoid in well-planned vs. impromptu settings, both in-person and online. Christi will also showcase examples of using QFT in culturally responsive ways to initiate semester-long investigations using Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) – a citizen science program in 123 countries. Public Speaking and the Question Formulation Technique: A Powerful Pairing for Speech Preparation
with Tatiana Rodriguez, Part-Time Lecturer, Rutgers University, School of Communication and Information
When my students are in the speech writing stage, I facilitate the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) so they may open up their creative and logical thinking strategies. I find this allows them to consider angles they would not have otherwise explored. The result? Their speeches have more depth, more audience connection, and more consideration for varying viewpoints. In this webinar I will share how I used the QFT in courses on public speaking this fall, via distance learning. Click here to register today.

Doing Research? What’s Your Question?
with Dr. Davida Scharf, Director of Reference and Instruction, New Jersey Institute of Technology
Ms. Joanne Dera, Science and Engineering Librarian, New Jersey Institute of Technology
The difficulties students have at the beginning of the research process in defining a researchable question given their constraints may be an important reason why some students struggle with research. Two academic librarians share how they have been using the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) with undergraduates and how it has helped improve student papers. Implementation of the Question Formulation Technique as a Teaching Strategy in Renewable Energy Engineering Education
with Dr. Claudia Torres Garibay, Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Department, Oregon Institute of Technology
Dr. Claudia Torres Garibay will share two ways she integrated the QFT as a teaching strategy for renewable energy engineering students. First, Dr. Torres Garibay will make visible how the QFT was utilized in a junior level class in Materials for Renewable Energy Applications to develop the outline of a term research paper. Secondly, Dr. Torres Garibay will share how the QFT was used in a cross-listed senior/graduate course in Bioenergy to develop a research topic. The QFT’s impact on student learning will be described and eminently practical details for integrating the QFT into engineering coursework will be outlined. This webinar will be useful for higher education faculty across disciplines who have some familiarity with the QFT and might be interested in learning more about how the QFT can support student research in the classroom.
